By country
Share of working-age people (15–64) using generative AI, Q2 2026. Global North averages 28.8%, Global South 16.2%. The bar is Microsoft's usage estimate; the tick and the small number are what people told Google/Ipsos in a 2025 survey, where countries were included.

How the numbers move
The chart starts from the original snapshot dated 2026-01-15: 8.1 billion people, about 1.3 billion free chatbot users, roughly 20 million paying users and about 3 million people using AI coding tools. Every day, each group grows along its observed adoption curve, and world population grows with UN estimates. The dots are reassigned so the 2,500 always add up.
These are modelled estimates, not a live head count. Like the original, the chart counts people who open an AI app on purpose — not people who meet AI inside search, phones or social apps. About 2.2 billion people have no internet access at all.
Country figures: Microsoft AI Diffusion Report Q2 2026 (usage measured from devices, adjusted for population), cross-checked with the Google/Ipsos 2025 survey. Surveys run higher because they poll people already online and count any use in a year. Platform totals: published user counts from OpenAI, Google and Meta.
